Forgive them, they are human too

by Christine Greyvenstein on 29 February 2012

Spokespeople are open to a lot of scrutiny and often have to deal with angry media and an even angrier public. I do understand that spokespeople, especially suspended ANC Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu, have in the past given reason to be scrutinised by cursing journalists and being blatantly rude. But most of them work pretty damn hard to ensure that they represent their respective official or minister with the utmost dignity.

Like any other person working in PR, spokespeople are only human and that means errors occur. It’s just a lot more public. Everyone gets angry, busy, frustrated and as a result of that makes mistakes. So why aren’t spokespeople allowed to make mistakes? I’m not saying they are somehow lifted above all scrutiny, but at least deserve to be treated with respect. Their responsibility in return is to make sure, above all else, that they communicate all relevant information at the best of their abilities.

Do you think that spokespeople in South Africa are doing a decent job? Or should they step up the pace? Leave your comment below.
