Information embargoes in the social age – on their way out?

If you’re a member of the media, you’ve been on the receiving end of an embargoed press release. The information is held back usually for another publication to have a longer lead, or because an official announcement is yet to be made (think of a big glitzy award ceremony – the release naming winners is often send out before the ceremony, but media are trusted to only publish the information once the winners are named).

All fair and well, but what about the fact that social media makes it so easy to pass information on – sometimes accidentally? I chatted to Chirene Campbell, managing director of Owlhurst Communication, who agreed that social media makes it that much easier to spread the word – one Whats App, BBM, MXit, Facebook or Twitter announcement could blow the wind out of any sails – and the slip could come from anyone who has access to the embargoed information, not necessarily the client, publicist or journalist.”

And never mind social media, the online space makes it that much easier to load content instantly for all to see. So it might not necessarily be a vindictive thought process along the lines of: “I’ll break the embargo and have an exclusive” on behalf of the journo who loads the content – press releases tend to pile up and you go into ‘load mode. On the other hand, even those that are more cautious might not remember to go back in their archives and load the ‘old one’ they received last week (that’s if they still have it).

My suggestion to get around this? It all comes down to clear communication and building a good media/PR relationship. Not convinced? Read my article on the ‘dark side divide’ and the need for us to all get along!

On that note, do you think embargo dates still have a place in the PR/ media industry? Has social/instant/online media changed the game entirely? Leave your thoughts below.
