Celebs support 1 Goal: the largest cause-related campaign of its kind

by Desi Tzoneva on 6 July 2010

With over 33-million children in Africa not going to school, the saying “it is greater work to educate a child, in the true and larger sense of the word, than to rule a state,” has never been more poignant. Moreover, with over 75-million children in the world not currently enrolled in primary school, a big initiative is needed to raise awareness about this problem and to ensure that global leaders stick to their commitments to education, made at the drafting of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.

And what is this big initiative? It’s the 1 Goal campaign, which is taking the communications industry by storm. The campaign is going to the root of the problem of access to education by trying to mobilise governments and global leaders to put their words into action by getting ordinary people to sign what is possibly one of the largest petitions on education of its kind, illustrating the vast scope of the PR and communications industry.

Strategically, 1 Goal is ‘recruiting’ people by asking them for their signatures in support of the campaign. But to make sure that 1 Goal reaches as many people as possible, it is leveraging the 2010 FIFA World Cup as a major platform, and using the voice of the official 2010 FIFA World Cup broadcaster, the SABC, which will see the SABC airing 1 Goal content throughout the World Cup, and urging fans to sign up to the campaign.

1 Goal is also employing the power of mobile by teaming up with Nokia to harness the power and global reach of mobile technology to launch an exclusive 1 Goal application on the Ovi store to promote ‘education for all’ in a fun and engaging way. The free app will enable users share their picture with their friends via social networks; email; and the 1 Goal website. The application also has additional information about 1 Goal, as well as exclusive videos and wallpapers for Nokia devices, which gives users the chance to show their support for the 1 Goal campaign.

Satellite projects of the 1 Goal campaign are also being launched, with Cameroon soccer star, Roger Milla; former Dutch international player, Ronald De Boer; and former Mexico, Nigeria and USA coach, Bora Milutinovic, launching a brand new education and football project that brings together children from a wide range of backgrounds as part of the 1 Goal: Education for All campaign. 1 Goal and the Qatar Football Association (FA) have developed a coaching and education programme to bring together 1 000 children and young people from around Johannesburg to experience 10 days of quality football coaching while learning about citizenship and the 32 countries taking part in the World Cup.
In addition, soccer players; FIFA officials; governments; celebrities; and most recently, former Archbishop, Desmond Tutu, are using their high profile status to encourage ordinary people to show their support.

This creative campaign appears to have similar features to the Hopenhagen campaign launched last year to draw attention to the world’s environmental problems and get world leaders to act to ensure change for the better. This time however, 1 Goal organisers are banking on the World Cup to gain visibility, a move that has reached millions of viewers glued to radios and TVs over the past three weeks. This is one serious campaign with a positive message, which will hopefully yield concrete results.
