Sifting through the clutter with CitizenTube

by kerryn le cordeur on 25 June 2010

ImageYouTube has become the go-to website for videos of any nature, from Julius Malema’s altercation with a BBC journalist; to Justin Bieber’s first public appearance; to the post-election riots in Iran; and even laughing babies. But all this content equates to 24 hours of video being uploaded onto the site every minute – so how do you ensure that your relevant content, that actually adds to the media landscape in the form of citizen journalism, is found among the other, albeit entertaining, clutter?

YouTube’s solution is the introduction of a News Feed that can be found on CitizenTube, which will highlight newsworthy videos uploaded by amateur videographers, as well as professional news outlets, and focus on freshness, both in terms of date and time loaded; impactful visuals; and relevance.

Not only does this make it easier to sift through the clutter, but it also serves as a way to ‘curate’ citizen journalism, in that while there is an abundance of user-generated content out there, CitizenTube aggregates the most relevant and newsworthy of that content on a single site that visitors can be assured is trustworthy, while still retaining its status as citizen journalism. The general thinking behind this www.reelseo.com/youtube-news-feed/ is that it could lead to a whole new viral video trend – the breaking news video. This is important because videos offer much more than a 140-character tweet is able to, thereby providing more context and accuracy, and a first-hand view of events as they play out.

It will be important for CitizenTube to balance visually shocking stories with those that are thoughtful; in depth; and highlight issues that may not be as immediately impactful, but may have more severe long-term consequences. If it can get this right and become a timely, relevant source of video news, it has the potential to rival, or at least support, traditional news networks, in a similar way to that in which YouTube is adding to the entertainment world by providing a platform for new talent to be discovered. It also gives unknown, talented individuals the opportunity to showcase their talent, whether it is singing, or a hidden penchant for journalism.
