The 'should kids have cell phones' can of worms

by Leigh Andrews on 12 February 2010

It's been said before - the future is predicted as ‘one mobile phone per child’, with 37-million mobile users in South Africa alone at present. Mobile phones only really became popular when I was in Matric a decade ago (giving my age away, I know, I know), when there wasn't much of an understanding of how this new communication device would change our lives, enhancing communication and making us that much more contactable - at any time, anywhere. This changed one of the fundamentals of home life - before, we would have to use a landline to get in touch. If out and away from home, then sorry for you, we could not communicate.

Almost everyone carries a mobile device of sorts these days, so as to be made aware of an 'emergency' or just a friend wanting to chat. As a result, kiddies now carry phones around with them from primary school already - some as early as the age of five. I won't go further into this as I know 'kids with cell phones' is a whole new can of worms to open.

It's not necessarily a bad idea to let your kids have a phone though, especially if they're a bit older and going out without mom and dad.

Parents concerned about their children’s whereabouts without having to make a call, which teens often don’t answer; or sending a text message, which they sometimes ignore. Some predict this will prevent many cases of child disappearance in the future.

What's your take on tots will telephones? Sickening or a lifestyle necessity? Leave your comments below.
