Freecycling to maintain a healthy planet

by kerryn le cordeur on 4 December 2009

ImageIf you’re looking to get rid of your unwanted goods, there are several good ways to do so. Place an ad in the classifieds; register on Bid or Buy if you’re interested in making a bit of money; or consider donating to a local charity - after all, one man’s trash is another’s treasure.

This is the thought behind The Freecycle Network, a platform for online recycling of used goods which has been compared to Bid or Buy or ebay, in that it allows users to place their unwanted goods online. However, instead of looking for the highest bidder, users simply wait for someone who can unburden them of these goods and make use of them, while simultaneously being part of a ‘potential revolution’ and creating a ‘worldwide gift economy’ that cuts down on waste; decreases consumerism; and connects people through giving.

Freecycle members post email offers for goods they no longer want, on a Yahoo! listserv for their local group. If another member is interested in the goods, they reply to the post, and the owner of the goods decides which interested party to give the goods to (similar to Bid or Buy or ebay, which allows users to select the highest bidder), and arranges for them to be picked up.

Apart from continuing to expand its operation, The Freecycle Network also has plans to educate people about recycling and waste reduction.

In a world constantly in discussion about maintaining a green planet, and with the divide between those who have and have not so great, it certainly seems like a good time to jump on the bandwagon and start thinking about how we can contribute to maintaining a healthy planet – physically and mentally. Movements such as The Freecycle Network help to achieve this buy reducing waste and giving to those who really need what we no longer do.
