Curators should credit their sources

On a slightly different tangent from my recent posts concerning the need to curate news sourced online, for accuracy and verification purposes, I was horrified to learn that popular Seth Rotherham of the award-winning 2oceans blog, had not been credited as a source in a ‘breaking news’ story in a local traditional newspaper. When confronted, the title claimed the blog had not been credited as this would ‘alert other media’ to the story. This really worries me.

The media should be working towards getting all news stories out there – not being the exclusive carrier of a certain story. If something is of public interest, it needs to be shared. If it comes from a specific source, this should be mentioned, so that other members of the media can do research and follow up with their own stories. Keeping the source out of the picture puts the whole story into a questionable frame – who’s to say it wasn’t made up from the start? Sources lend further credibility to the resulting story.

While the blogosphere is often the criticised media avenue, as it is online and so much harder to pin down and regiment, I feel that traditional media should pull up its socks, too, and not forget the basic tenets of journalism – you should ALWAYS credit your source.
