Google launches Street View data collection

by Desi Tzoneva on 3 September 2009

ImageOn 1 September, Google announced that it will begin collecting data from South African streets, buildings, parks and many other geographic areas. This would serve as a tool that enhances Google Maps and will act as the biggest possible zoom one could have on a map, enabling users to view road signs; building facades; parks; restaurants; parking facilities, and everything else that an area contains. Google will begin collecting data locally in Johannesburg; Pretoria; Cape Town; Durban; and Port Elizabeth simultaneously, and hopes that it would have finished data collection before the start of the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Google said that this would be an excellent tool for foreign tourists who would be able to preview an area; a hotel; a stadium; besides others, before arriving and make the most appropriate arrangements needed before their trip.

At the moment, only a few countries in the world have this facility and it’s nice to know that locally, Google is putting us on the international map, exposing the country’s beauty and other unique offerings.

If you’d like to see what Street View will look like, why not visit Google Maps, or enter Street View and a country in a search? The countries that currently have Street View include the US; countries in Western Europe; Australia; New Zealand; and Japan. It's also a great tool for virtual tourism - visiting a place online before your actual trip.
