The US government sets a great online example

Search Marketing Gurus last week blogged that President Obama (in his 50 days in office) has been changing the way that the executive branch of the government does business online.

SMG goes on to list how America’s ‘first Social Media president’ got his team to revitalise the official US government website, whitehouse.gov, which is regularly updated. This was a continuation of change.gov, which was teamed with the launch of barackobama.com – a platform for open discussion, with a blog and weekly YouTube video addresses.

But that’s not all. There’s also recovery.gov, aimed at keeping taxpayers abreast with economic developments, and healthreform.gov, which was launched this month and is run by the Us Department of Health and Human Services. USAService.org is another barackobama.com link, which helps US citizens find causes and schedule events in their area.

Obama’s team has also put together several YouTube channels, where one can view regularly-updated footage on the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the White House itself.

I’ve long been a fan of Obama’s online strategy, which sets a great example for our own government, which could do with a revamp of its online offerings. While the info featured is up-to-date, it lacks the flash and interaction offered by Obama’s team. Do an online search and see what you think.
