Facebook and Twitter, today’s main news sources

by Melanie Heyns on 20 March 2012

The world of new media, although still foreign to many people, is to others their playground. For the world of journalism, new media is yet another territory into which the world of news can expand. As a recently graduated journalist and not too long ago a job seeker, I discovered just how important Facebook and Twitter were becoming to media companies.
Everyone knows how nerve- racking it can be to go for a job interview and to prepare for all the questions your possible employer may be asking you. The one theme I did notice popping up time and again in my set job interviews was ‘What do you think of Facebook and Twitter as a news source?’and ‘Are you active on Twitter? ‘

My personal opinion is that Facebook and Twitter are fast becoming people’s number one source for their ‘news’ fix. I have to admit that when I do find myself standing in queues at food stores, the Department of Home Affairs or even traffic, I resort to Facebook or Twitter on my smartphone in order to entertain myself.
It is so much more convenient for someone to look at one network such as Twitter and view everything from their friend’s’ personal updates to a news organisation’s ‘highlights’ of current news affairs. Journalists of today are therefore required to have so many more ‘skills’ than the traditional bunch when it comes to the job environment. Not only should you have good writing skills, you also need to be able to communicate across the various social mediums such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs.

I personally find it all very exciting, being able to communicate across all these mediums, but it is also challenging, to some degree. I’d like to know: across which mediums do you communicate the most? Do you find communicating over these mediums exciting or challenging? Leave your comments below.

People want their news fast and easy to access, new media journalism allows this. Those who think otherwise, need to keep up with the times.

The skills i dont have but yes new media has alot to offer when it comes to delivering news on point as they happen and without having to read alot in order to get to the point/climax of the article. New Media is a great medium!

I am a third year journalism student majoring in New Media. I am just as fascinated with this ever-growing medium but cautiously so. What online media has done is provide everyone with the platform to be “journalists”. In an industry that is already suffering due to the attraction of PR, and the slump of traditional media meaning fewer jobs, we now have to compete even harder for the readers’ attention. The reader has so much choice online. Even if the reader chooses to read the reported news rather then getting news directly from the source, ie citizen journalism, the abundance of news online means we have to be even more competitive in crafting news that is relevant, interesting and up to date or else the reader will just move on.

i prefer facebook because that where i have a lot friends and those in the industry who can update me and also comment on my status, for me it is still difficult to get people's opinion via twitter because i don't have many people following me. social network have become our new sources, we able to get politian, celebrities opinion and do a story on it.

Those who speak negatively about new media journalism are mainly the old school print journalists whop fail to understand it.

I think that New media is the way foward for all journalists as the keeps on changing journalists need to keep up with the time.

New Media is very exciting and makes it easy to deliver news to people as they happen. Unlike print and broadcast media as news take place now but they only do the report later.

We are living in a fast-paced world which demands an information on an instant and the best way to to do that is to be up to speed with the various mediums that are available to us like Facebook and Twitter. Newsrooms these days are changing the way they do things, they are adapting from the traditional audience that they cater for to the online audience which makes pretty easier for those journlists who are exposed to New media. It is an advantage for those journalists since they can express their ideas through different mediums.

I am a third year journalism student, doing New Media. I personally find this easier, and a faster method to acquire news. I also find it entertaining and exciting. This is the way foward, and I am pleased with it.

I think in order to keep up with the new generation when it comes to reading news, new media is the way. I for one, I’m not the biggest fan of print media but I am always online checking the latest news trough Facebook and Twitter. In online media is also easy to choose what you want to read compare to print media and is why it is important to get good writers on the various websites.

The world of new media is the new face of journalism that has endless and exciting job opportunities to new journalism graduates. It gives one a platform to tell their story in more than one form giving you a chance to see how best you can tell your story be it through the visual, audio or the written form. For me journalists of today are lucky to have new media,as I have mentioned it means more job opportunities since many newspapers want some of their stories published on line.New media creates a relationship between the writer and the reader since the readers can comment on the stories, its like some kind of feedback from your readers. This is the kind of relationship a journalist can have with the reader only in an online medium. For now I can say I have some of the skills required to adapt in the new media landscape, but I think with more practise and more experience in the industry I can acquire more skills and also polish the one's I have already.

Being a journalism student majoring in New Media myself, I find using these mediums both exciting and challenging. Exciting as a reader and challenging as a journalist. As a reader, one gets precisely what they are looking for, instant and constant updates on anything and everything happening around them. But as a journalist, it means a lot of hard work; delivering well researched, factual as well as entertaining stories all in a remarkably limited amount of time can't be child's play.

I am a third year journalism and my major is New Media. New Media has indeed become apart of my life but i have my reservations about it, we all know that new media and online is the future of journalism but i feel that more than often people prefer traditional journalism because they trust black and white.

The evolution of new media has made it easier to access news and has certainly made the consumption of news a more fun experience with its diverse forms. As a third year journalism student, I am hopeful about a future in new media.

A journalist needs to be equipped in all aspects of what’s currently evolving before our very eyes everyday. New Media does seem to be taking over traditional print media however there are a lot of newspaper empires who have yet to catch up.

Adapting to the ever evolving world of technology is quite a challenge.New Media journalism presents exciting challenges that leaves any journalist with a vast knowledge on the world of technology and on line-media.Whats sets New Media apart from other news mechanisms for me, it how it allows me to be hands on. Whether through blogging or social networks I am responsible for the final product. Place aside its immediacy, New Media offers various channels of growth and skills for journalists. An any journalist that wants to be in the forefront of news dissemination will take it upon themselves to learn the medium.Very insightful article Melanie.

New media, for me personally is very interesting and is a fast medium in which to receive news, and acquire information. It is also entertaining and easily accessible and its always there, there wont be times where you search on-line and not find what you want , as compared to newspapers when its sold out that's it..New Media is the future.

Hi Melanie. My name is Fatima, and I lecture New Media 3 at a tertiary institute, as part of the Journalism programme. As part of our class exercise today, I asked the students to read your article and blog post, and to comment thereon. I'd like to know - what are the essential skills you think New Media students need to learn in order to fare well in the industry?

greetings Melanie.Facebook and twitter has taken the world by storm, and i believe these two communication mediums will conntineu to dominate ,no matter how many social sites mushroom to compete with the two mediums they will always lead the way. What i do not like about the two mediums is that in a way ,they have turned everyone ,who is active to these site an overnight journalists.
com  Njabulo Xakaza said on 22 March 2012:
New Media journalism is the future. It is fast readers have a short attention span, readers want something that will summarise the story but have all the important facts in it.
com  Sindisiwe said on 22 March 2012:
New media has made journalism exciting. There are some challenges I face as a journalism student but I believe it all lies in allowing myself to adapt to certain media changes every day. Technology introduces new things to us now and then, I still find myself updating my status on Twitter, that is the disadvantage of getting too comfortable with these things because you end up being left behind in everything. I believe it is my duty to make sure that I learn all that has to do with new media because it is indeed the future.
com  nontuthuko said on 22 March 2012:
new media is a new and exciting form of journalism that provide immediate attainance of information,in this fast paced life people have no time to flip through hard copy newspaper they want something thats instant and with new media its possible since they can even get news updates using their cellphones anytime anywhere.

I am a third year journalism student at the Durban University of Technology and one of my major is New Media. I think this media is the future and possesses great power because it gives everyone a platform to express or have the chance to become a journalist. This was evident in Egypt where social networks and new media was the catalyst that sparked the democratical protests that forced a change in not only Egypt but also in other dictatorship nations. New media delivers news faster and easily accessible than any other mediuma.
