Skip to the beat of happy journalism

by Christine Greyvenstein on 9 November 2011

Becoming a journalist is not the first career choice for most matriculants, so the only convincing factor might be the beats that the industry offers. I remember telling my dad that I wanted to write for a living and he laughed, hoping it was just a silly idea and that I’d end up being an engineer or doctor. Not only did I choose a so-called ‘slacker’s’ career, but I also have an immense passion for cars – not what every dad wants for his little princess.

Nevertheless, I already had two jobs in radio before getting my degree. So Dad, I’m not that much of a disappointment. But based on my experience, I do believe that without a set idea of the journalism beat that most appeals to you, it could become a pointless career after all. For Trevor Cramer it is sport, for Stephen Grootes it’s politics, and for John Bentley (and myself) it’s cars. To learn how to write down facts in an attractive manner is easy and can be taught, but writing intriguing pieces about the things you are passionate about, shows real talent.

No matter what kind of journalist you want to become, it remains hard work and it’s an ever-changing environment, so the ‘adapt-or-die’ phrase applies. We often hear that “If you do what you love you will never work a day in your life”, and although it might not immediately feel that way, as soon as you pass the growing pains – boy, is it good!

Are you an aspiring journalist? What beats would you like to cover in the industry? Leave your comment below.
