Digital death of celebrities does so much more than raise funds

ImageWe’ve all heard about committing Web 2.0 suicide, as in “wiping your online slate completely clean and eliminating most traces of your social media indiscretions,” whether because you’re a little embarrassed about your online antics or simply need a brief hiatus from the social media world to curb your addiction. But Hollywood celebrities have taken the idea of a digital death a step further, banding together on Wednesday, 1 December, World AIDS Day. They are making ‘the ultimate sacrifice’ by signing off of Twitter and Facebook until their collective 30-million fans pledge at least $1-million to buy their digital lives back. The money raised will go to those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India, while the campaign itself also serves to raise AIDS awareness.

Celebrities taking part in the ‘… Is Dead’ campaign include Ryan Seacrest; Lady Gaga; Kim and Khloe Kardashian; Justin Timberlake; P. Diddy; Usher; Jay Sean; Alicia Keys; Jennifer Hudson; Elijah Wood; Serena Williams; Swizz Beatz; the cast of MTV’s The Buried Life; socialite, Daphne Guinness; singer, Janelle Monae; Twilight’s Bronson Pelletier; and singer, Kimberly Cole. The campaign is run by the Keep a Child Aliveorganisation, lead by celebrity ambassador, Alicia Keys.

Apart from fans and followers of these celebrities noticing their absence online and being told that that their favourite stars are ‘dead’, the celebrities in question have also made a series of viral videos explaining the campaign and appealing to the public to donate $10 to ‘bring them back to life’, thus spreading the word beyond their circle of fans to the broader online world. There are also images, shot by Markus Klinko and Indrani of each of the participating celebrities lying in coffins, which pack quite a dramatic punch and certainly make you want to find out more.

American fans are asked to SMS ‘BUYLIFE’ to 90999 to make their donations, but the rest of us can visit http://buylife.org/ or, as Vanessa Raphaely says, “there are hundreds of AIDS charities, here, at home, that could do with your money, time and thoughts. Choose one.”

There’s been some commentary around this campaign with people saying these celebrities could have easily thrown together $1-million themselves, or organised a concert to raise funds, but I think the ‘…Is Dead’ idea goes much further than simply raising much needed funds – it really does make you stop and think… these individuals play an important role in many people’s lives and the idea that they could be dead is not one to be taken lightly. But the thing is, we can ‘bring them back to life’ by simply donating a small sum of money. For me, this is exceptionally symbolic as it’s not that simple to bring an AIDS sufferer back to life – it much better to make a difference NOW before it’s too late.

So, well done to Hollywood, you get my thumbs up for this one.
