About that thing called press freedom

by Desi Tzoneva on 26 May 2010

Last week I was given an assignment to write a story about press freedom, given the controversy sparked by Zapiro’s most recent cartoon, depicting the Muslim prophet, Muhammad. While the obvious debates around freedom of speech and the press versus freedom of religion littered the online space, I knew where I stood on the issue but I needed to find someone who opposed my views; argued against me; and told me why. I needed to debate and know the opposition’s stance – on the grounds of logical argument.

I found just the right person, and after speaking to them, realised that the there was absolutely nothing wrong with the debate itself. There is no way that everyone will agree on the same thing. What was really important at this stage – is for all of us to calm down. Already, an anti-Zapiro Facebook page has been established which harbours the makings of the same hateful and violence-inciting vocabulary as that depicted on the ANC Youth League’s Facebook wall a few weeks ago.

My contribution to the debate? Nah, nothing about the debate itself. I know what I think and why and I don't feel the need to convince others to my way of thinking. And besides, there are institutions to deal with these problems. I think they have enough experience and knowledgeable people driving them to reach the best possible conclusion. But, what’s my contribution to the nature of the debate? I think it should be respectful, no matter what.

There are institutions to deal with problems such as these. Let’s strengthen them by using them rather than showing our ignorance through the use of threats online. Otherwise, we end up looking and sounding like overpowering, one-sided and single-minded tyrants as opposed to the peaceful citizens I like to think we can be.

No matter what, I don’t think that it is right to threaten violence or speak hatefully. Debate, but respect.

---Edit---
So the verdict in this case is out. With the M&G winning the case. Here's an interesting article if you'd like to follow this debate. I'm not going to comment on the ruling but I'll just say again that we can't underestimate the importance of our institutions.
