SA media loves Malema

Wikipedia defines Julius Malema as follows: "Julius Sello Malema... is a South African politician, and the president of the African National Congress Youth League. He is best known for his controversial statements and speeches, and vociferous support for African National Congress president Jacob Zuma."

Controversial statements, indeed. Hardly a day goes by that Julius is not in the news for his outlandish opinions - if the recent Nedbank comments were not enough to grate your gherkin, try the following on for size: “there’s no such thing as a hermaphrodite”; “Helen Zille is a political toddler”; “Where are the white South Africans to welcome Caster? If it was rugby, they would be here”; Naledi Pandor has "a fake American accent”… the list goes on.

As a result, Malema has become a frequent target for lampooning in the media. Sunday Times satirical columnist, Hogarth, calls him the "Jelly Tsotsi," while cartoonists Zapiro and Jeremy Nell frequently draw him dressed in baby nappies. In January 2009, 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s Whackhead Simpson, aired a prank call using sound clips from various speeches of Barack Obama to hold a "conversation" with Malema. Afterwards, Malema denied ever speaking to Obama, and claimed to be unaware of any prank call. Malema was also portrayed in a controversial TV ad by Nandos.

Love him or hate him, media mention of the man is hard to avoid. For more on Julius, visit zoopy; classicmalema.co.za; or his Facebook group.
