Simply having an online presence is not the answer

by Leigh Andrews on 25 September 2009

Sean Williams recently summed up key points from an article he had written for the Institute of Public Relations on communication strategy – and one of the points really hits home hard. Williams states: “Social Media is no panacea... We know that the creation of social networks - and the action of dialogue within these communities - has a solid theoretical basis in public relations. However, we just don't have a large enough body of objective research on the action of social media on business objectives. As practitioners, we need to monitor the social media multi-verse for what's being said about us. And we need to think through, strategically, what we'll do with that information once we have it!”

Mack Collier of The Viral Garden also puts the point across well: “So many companies are jumping on Twitter and Facebook (for example) because they are the 'hot' sites of the moment, and/or because they think they need to be there. They use these sites for a couple of weeks, then realise they have absolutely no idea what's going on. That's when I get the 'we started using Twitter/Facebook but really have no idea what we are supposed to be doing with it' email.”

Williams adds: “Today's masters of measurement are working through the maturation of best practices into standards, and must take care not to stifle innovation, but to give guidance to practitioners on whether or how the processes work when social media is the agent of creation, support, enlargement and participation in our society.”

This is exactly what we are going to focus on in our next Newsclip Networking session – the fact that simply having that social network presence is not enough to build brand equity. You need to have the presence but also put in the effort to make it interesting, and relevant for people to want to join/ follow your company online. If you have anything to add, feel free to post your comments below, or contact us on marketing@newsclip.co.za.
