Online platform boosts dialogue and exchange

by Desi Tzoneva on 29 June 2009

News24`s community citizen journalism platform,
MyNews24, is a local initiative that aims to bring ordinary people closer to journalism. The platform enables anyone to publish letters; opinion pieces; stories; and photos or videos of an event. This is an attempt to bring journalism closer to those who previously didn`t have a chance to access a journalism-style platform.

The community journalism initiative, which was launched about two-and-a-half-years ago, has over 100 000 unique browsers a month, making it bigger than some online news websites in South AfricaImage

Articles that are published include traditional letters to the editor; longer opinion pieces by users; photos and videos. The platform is 100% user-generated, and while all pieces can be commented on, a team at News24 moderates comments.

A story written by a citizen journalist, that I read recently, was about a complaint against a medical aid company. Just browsing through the commentary on the article made me think that it would be almost impossible to have such a focused dialogue, without time limits, on any other platform. It is also a great way to get tips and gain information from complete strangers who’ve been in the same boat as you.

This is certainly an initiative that has grown, and it appears to hold potential for some priceless commentary and event capturing of a non-traditional journalistic nature. I look forward to see what this evolves into.
