Could you live without being connected?

by kerryn le cordeur on 7 May 2009

In today’s culture, where we have become accustomed to being connected to a network of people and information at the touch of a button no matter our location, it seems that the tools required to maintain that connectivity are viewed as more important than items which, in the past, we vowed we would never live without. A report on itweb claims that in the present economic climate, with people looking to cut costs, many would choose to go without items such as tumble dryers, air-conditioners and microwave ovens, in favour of keeping “must-have” items such as cell phones, computers and iPods.

ImageEven Barack Obama can’t live without his Blackberry and insisted that he would keep it even after being elected into office – raising major security concerns and forcing the National Security Agency (NSA) to develop encryption software so that he can continue being connected securely.

It’s amazing how reliant we have become on gadgets without which we lived quite blissfully in ignorance for so long. The same could be said, however, for those items that we are supposedly now willing to do without – tumble dryers and microwave ovens included.

In the latest Viral Garden blogpost, blogger, Mack Collier, discusses how useful it would be to have everyone you know using social media because of the ease of connectivity this would create. However, there is a comment on this post posing the question: “what if all the social networks on the internet blew up tomorrow?” To take this a step further, what if we were denied access to our “must-have” items, to that connectivity we have become so accustomed to?

Would it become as easy a transition to go back to life before those gadgets and tools as it seems to be to go back to life without our household conveniences?

I, for one, can’t imagine my life without those household conveniences so I certainly can’t see myself coping very well without the gadgets that keep me connected to the world around me.
