Vodacom gets behind the supporters as well as the team

To mark the start of the 2009 Super 14, Vodacom has launched a new campaign, targeting the avid rugby fan.

Player 23 is a brilliant campaign, getting the fans involved, making them feel as though they are as invaluable to the team as the other 22 players.
The Player 23 ad shows Jan, the idolised Player 23, doing his day-to-day thing, while the “real” rugby players secretly follow him around, trying to be just like him. It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but still quite cute because it’s an illustration of how much the loyal fan means to a rugby side.

The Player 23 campaign also has a website, where fans can download their own Player 23 lockers onto Imagetheir PCs or Macs and personalise them by adding their name, picture and favourite team. Players then have to earn various pieces of (virtual) rugby gear before they are allowed to qualify for the team. Once a player is kitted out, they can start collecting caps, which then put them in line to win various exciting prizes, such as meeting their favourite players on the field.

The lockers will provide fans with access to the latest information about their team and enable them to challenge their friends, in order to win more prizes.

The campaign also has a mobile element, whereby fans can download rugby content for their cell phones, as well as update their Player 23 profile.

I think this is a great initiative from Vodacom, as it allows fans to become the 23rd player of their favourite team- the greatest supporter. It’s a fun, interactive way to get even more support for the Super 14.

Here’s to Vodacom, the greatest supporter of the greatest supporter!
