The 10th West African Mining and Power Exhibition

Published: 26 April 2012

This year’s West African Mining and Power Exhibition (WAMPEX) looks to be the biggest ever, as exhibitor enquiries continue to pour in. WAMPEX, in association with the West African Mining and Power Conference (WAMPOC), takes place between Wednesday, 6 and Friday, 8 June at the Accra International Conference Centre in Accra, Ghana.

A WAMPEX post-show analysis confirms 65 to 70 exhibitors attended last year’s event, a figure already surpassed this year. “We are now almost on 80 exhibitors with seven weeks to go. Enquiries are still pouring in,” says John Thomson, managing director of Exhibition Management Services (EMS). This makes WAMPEX 2012 the largest in the history of the event, both in exhibitor numbers and square meters utilised.

WAMPEX 2012 is the 10th biennial international exhibition for suppliers to West Africa’s rapidly growing power and mining sectors. “Ghana and other countries in the West Africa sub-region have attracted significant global exploration capital. The role of WAMPOC/WAMPEX in this success cannot be overemphasized,” says Benjamin Ni Ayi Aryee, chief executive officer of Ghana’s Minerals Commission.

The interest shown by companies and organisations in WAMPEX attests to the fact that West African countries, in particular the power and mining industries in those regions, are growing. “It is fantastic to see such a positive response. It shows businesses and organisations are being proactive. They want to promote and grow their businesses,” says Thomson.

At WAMPEX visitors and exhibitors will be exposed to an array of products and services, from industry-specific equipment, technology and services to consumables. Added to this, they will be able to meet and connect with influential decision-makers in the region.

When it comes to trade and business opportunities “The WAMPOC/WAMPEX Forum provides a platform to access opportunities and meet representatives of government agencies responsible for managing mining in West Africa,” says Ni Ayi Aryee.

One company that hopes to gain such exposure from WAMPEX is first-time exhibitor the First Tech Group. “WAMPEX is a key international event for the mining and power industries, and it appears evident that it is the event to participate in to successfully promote and market your company and product portfolio within the West African region,” says Megan Bell, Group Marketing and Events at the First Tech Group.

The First Tech Group holds a vast product portfolio of commercial and infrastructural products, which will be showcased at the event. “Our product portfolio will undoubtedly be of interest to delegates of the 2012 WAMPEX event as we are able to offer a range of high-quality complementary products for various projects,” says Bell.

Acrylic Art Lighting and Pole Manufacturers, a leading manufacturer of lighting poles and fittings; Celik Engineering supplies, fabricates and erects all types of industrial piping and fittings; and Energotec installs electrical solutions within the petrochemical industry – these are just some the companies and offerings which fall under the First Tech Group stable.

Another exhibitor set to appear at this year’s show is Geotech Airborne, specialising in geophysical surveys. The company will launch its helicopter-borne VTEMplus geophysical system with magnetic gradiometer at WAMPEX. Geotech Airborne will use WAMPEX to “generate airborne geophysical surveying opportunities in West Africa”, says Christina Hutchinson, senior sales manager at Geotech Airborne.

Some of the many other exhibitors attending this year’s event include: Acier Profile SBB (Canada), AngloGold Ashanti (South Africa), Bauer Maschinene GmbH (Germany), EEPC India (India), Multitech Services (Ghana), Golden Star Resources (Ghana), Southern Mapping (South Africa) and United Spectrometer Technologies (South Africa).

WAMPEX 2012 is fully supported and endorsed by:
• The Ghana Chamber of Mines
• The Ministry of Land and Natural Resources
• The Ministry of Energy
• The Minerals Commission of Ghana
• The Volta River Authority
