“I’m positive that this target of R1.2-million can be reached through a combination of hard work from dedicated individuals and athletes, the unwavering support of sponsors the mission to improve the lives of less fortunate children,” said Wright at the 2011 launch held at the EP Child and Youth Care Centre.

The Trust asks companies or individuals to sponsor athletes taking part in the annual Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa events, including the Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 and the Iron Girl South Africa Fun Run.

Sponsored athletes, are kitted out in bright orange triathlon vests, distinguishing them from the crowds to ensure sponsors names are clearly visible.

According to organisers, 31 athletes participated under the banner of Ironman 4 the Kidz in East London on January 23 during the Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 which raised R160 000.

Going forward, the Trust is encouraging individuals or companies to make donations towards the final target of R1.2-million.

The ten beneficiaries selected to benefit from this year’s event include the EP Child and Youth Care Centre, the Khayalethu Youth Centre, MTR Smit Children’s Haven, Sabrina Love Foundation, Salem Baby Centre, Enkanzimulweni Ncedani, Robin Good Foundation, We Care Outreach Initiative, Oosterland Foundation and Lelethu Baby Shelter.

The 2011 Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa event will kick off on Friday, 8 April with an energy-packed weekend including Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa, the Vodacom Corporate Triathlon Challenge, Pritt Ironkids and the Iron Girl South Africa Fun Run.
