Hyundai SA hosts successful Career Camp for underprivileged students

Published: 7 August 2012

As part of the company’s commitment to stimulate interest in the motoring sector as an attractive career opportunity, Hyundai South Africa’s head office – between 3 and 5 August – hosted the Hyundai Career Camp.

This camp, which was attended by 40 students from rural and underprivileged schools in Johannesburg, is an extension of Hyundai’s holiday apprentice training programme and is aimed at providing access to skills development and real insight into the motoring industry.

Says Michael Rohde, after sales and dervice sirector at Hyundai South Africa: “This year was the second consecutive year we have undertaken this initiative and we certainly believe that through the investment that this initiative offers – that of money and time – that we are providing access and firsthand experience to the real world of motoring and a true understanding of this career path, for these youth.”

The camp is fully funded by Hyundai South Africa, where an investment of almost R50 000 was made to ensure that the children are transported, fed and accommodated on the three day career camp. The camp covered all areas of the motoring industry – taking students to a dealership, the Hyundai parts distribution centre, the training centre and a visit to motoring component partners as well as a practical training session relating to how to diagnose a problem using diagnostic equipment.

“Through this structured approach, we aim to ensure that these students are given a true view of what the motoring industry entails. Additionally, we hope that this access to information will assist in driving interest in the motoring industry and create excitement around this career path, for further skills development. Furthermore, these children had the opportunity to witness what it means to be a ‘mechanic’ in more detail and certainly see that this job involves more than just getting your hands dirty,” continues Rohde.

Following this camp, Hyundai will offer selected youth – those that have good school results and show passion and motivation to succeed – the opportunity to apply to become part of the Hyundai apprenticeship programme. Furthermore, on matriculation, fifteen of these students will be given the opportunity to work for Lumar – a Hyundai partner – giving them the opportunity to gain the necessary skills and workplace experience.
