Silver films for the month of August to focus on the best actresses

Published: 27 July 2012

A royal list of female actresses, led by British Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, head to the small screen on the quality movie home Silver, channel 112 on TopTV in August in celebration of women.

August is National Women’s Month – celebrated to commemorate the march of 20 000 women to Union Buildings in 1955 to protest against Pass Laws – and in keeping with the theme, the Silver Channel has put together an engaging line-up of movies featuring some of the most amazing modern women in film.

Aimed at educating and entertaining, Silver brings viewers Mirren, the daughter of a cab-driver, who won an Academy Award in 2007 for Best Actress for her leading role in The Queen.

She will be featured in a 1985 classic romantic comedy Heavenly Pursuit, also starring Tom Conti.

Described as a “delightful, off-beat comedy”, the movie is a far cry from the serious roles Mirren became famous for. It is about matters of life and death ... and more important things but no doubt a key work that set her on her journey towards stardom around the world.

Set in a school in Glasgow, Scotland, it's the story of Vic Matthews (Conti), who loves two things in life; his job teaching remedial kids and fellow teacher Ruth Chancellor (Mirren) who he pursues relentlessly. When the school authorities decide to push for its patron, the blessed Edith Semple to be made a full saint, it needs a miracle. Vic doesn't realise it, but he'll need one too.

Silver is a specialist channel offering quality movies to discerning film lovers. The channel aims to reach the position of a high status brand; an exclusive must-have for the well informed movie lovers: a warm and welcoming guide to the world of independent cinema, inclusive and engaging, not elitist and narrow.

The full Women’s Day line-up is as follows:

Parker Posey – Flirt

Helen Mirren - Heavenly Pursuit
