FNB lends a helping hand to the Khayelitsha community

Published: 20 April 2012

In March, FNB Western Cape volunteers started laying the foundations for a multipurpose child and youth care facility based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. In partnership with the Southern African Sustainable Development Initiative (SASDI), this initiative will provide residential care, early intervention, reintegration and rehabilitation programmes for 75 former street children in the area.

FNB embarked on this project to help uplift the local community and provide a safe-haven for troubled youth. “FNB has committed to assisting with the building of the home, which is anticipated to be complete before the end of 2012. This home will give these children a positive influence in life with a chance to learn and the confidence to reach for their dreams,” says Pearl Nel Western Cape provincial chair marketing, events and volunteers programme coordinator.

The current Homestead facility is a rented building, leased from the Child Welfare Society which is in a poor state of repair. The dormitory style accommodation is inadequate for the effective development of the young boys.

The new 2 500m² development includes three cottages, an early intervention centre, a counselling centre, a community hall which will also benefit the surrounding impoverished community.

“We wanted to make a sustainable impact in the Khayelitsha community. We are passionate about this project and aim to make a difference in the lives of these boys and the community at large,” concludes Nel.
